Fryksdalen

Let us start with the formal explanation: the name Fryksdalen is a geographical term wich here defines a valley. The valley starts in Kil and ends in Torsby. This shows two fascinating facts, namely that the valley is approximately 110 kilometres long and that Sunne is just in the centre of it.

The name Fryksdalen comes from the three interconnected lakes, 'Nedre Fryken', 'Mellanfryken' and 'Övre Fryken', that stretches through out the valley. To be accurate the correct term for the lakes is the Lakes of Fryken. We, the inhabitants of Fryksdalen, like to keep things plain and simple - we just call the whole lot Fryken.

We dare to say that Fryksdalen is so much more than a technical term. Fryksdalen is a spirit and a mind. Fryksdalen is calm glittering water and roaring sea. Fryksdalen are thick magical fir forests. Fryksdalen is the quilt of the farmer´s land. Fryksdalen are sweeping blue mountains, here borrowing a description from Selma Lagerlöf. Fryksdalen is the people known for their hospitality, diligence and their healthy attitude that everything will be all right.

Now you know what Fryksdalen really is. Sunne share this beautiful landscape with its friends in the south - Kil, and its fellow companions in the north - Torsby. Sunne is the pulsating heart just in the middle of Fryksdalen.

A good advice when wanting to find out more about what Fryksdalen really is - look at the chapter called the Landscape in Selma Lagerlöf´s The Saga of Gösta Berling. There is no more magnificent description to be found.
