
There is no statue here in Sunne over this famous man. Probably because it isn´t necessary, since the work of Göran Tunström gives him a recognition as solid as a grand monument. His books are being read all over the world, and still his stories continues to fascinate - former readers as well as a new audience.
Many of our visitors asks why there isn´t any statue of this famous man from Sunne. The plain answer is that Göran Tunström didn´t want any attention of that sort. Göran Tunström was a modest man with the ambition to write, and only write. The recognition he got through his works was far enough, therefor there was no need for a statue. A wish that is still respected.
The memory of Göran Tunström continues vividly in Sunne. While reading his books it becomes clear that Sunne played an important role for Göran Tunström´s authorship. In many of Göran Tunström´s works Sunne is the scene where everything takes place. Göran Tunström was born in Karlstad 1937 and grew up in Sunne. His literate breakthrough came in 1984 when he was awarded the Scandinavian Council´s literary prize. Other awards received by Göran Tunström are the Mårbacka Prize, and later on, the Selma Lagerlöf Prize for Literature wich is distributed during the Culture Week (Kulturveckan) here in Sunne. Both prizes are regarded as highly desirable and worthy throughout the literate world.
The most famous works of Göran Tunström are The Christmas Oratory, wich also successfully was put on the silver screen in 1996, and The Vicar´s Boy, the Thief and 'Berömda män som varit i Sunne'. Göran Tunström passed away, far too early, February 5, 2000. He is burried next to his mother and father just by the eastern gable of Sunne Church.
